How did you get your start with SAP?
I learned about SAP during my undergrad at Grand Valley State University. The business school had a required ERP course and I learned about SAP processes and developed an interest since this tied my interests of business and technology. I was fortunate to land a job at Owens Corning out of college and was placed with an SAP CO expert on a European implementation. I learned a tremendous amount from that project and am very thankful for the many professors and colleagues that mentored me as I started my career.
What are you most proud of in your SAP career?
Publishing my first book on SAP careers was a huge accomplishment and something I never thought I would have an opportunity to do so early in my career. I am very proud of seizing the opportunity after meeting Martin at the Controlling 2013 conference. I am a big proponent of young people finding their voice and finding what they can share with others. We often think we don’t know enough or aren’t senior enough to take opportunities like this and I am proud to have continued with publishing a book Practical Guide to SAP CO-PC (Product Cost Controlling) and just this past month a second edition of The Essential SAP Career Guide.
What are some of the most important trends that you see currently impacting SAP teams?
S/4 HANA is having a big impact in the consulting world. Companies are seeing that HANA is everything they’ve been wanting from an ERP and there is a lot of activity right now.
How do you stay up to date on SAP topics? What resources do you regularly use?
I am fortunate to have a massive network of experts within Deloitte that I can tap in to for expertise in all areas of SAP and beyond. I use SCN in a limited capacity and use the SAP Service Marketplace extensively for research. I do refer to some textbooks on occasion, but typically stick to electronic sources.
What is your favorite vacation spot?
A fun fact about me is that this Fall, I will have been to Hawaii 6 times now in 5 years for vacation. It is my most favorite vacation spot and the proximity to San Diego is too convenient to pass up. This September will be the second time I have been this year and it will be the 7th time total I have visited.
